Mt. Pinos
Due
south of
Pine Mountain Club CA in the
Los Padres
National Forest lies Mt. Pinos, an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. Mount Pinos
offers a spectacular variety of hiking, biking, and
equestrian trails. During the winter, the mountain
offers some of the best cross-country skiing and
snowboarding in
Southern California. At 8,831 ft,
Mt. Pinos experiences unusually harsh winters for the Southern California area, experiencing several feet of snowfall each year.
Mt. Pinos is also considered one of the best spots in Southern California to view the stars because of its very low light pollution, dry air, and frequently clear skies. On the darkest Saturday night of the month the parking lot at the top of Mt. Pinos becomes an astronomer’s delight! Hundreds of astronomers take advantage of the darkest, clearest skis in Southern California between May and October. As long as you dim your headlights as you enter the parking lot, the star gazing experts are frequently willing to share their telescopes.
