Pinon Pine
One of the native species that abounds in
Pine Mountain Club is the Pinon Pine
tree. It is unique to the
Southwestern United States and Mexico. The fragrance of the Pinon Pine, especially when burned, is unmistakable. The trees yield edible Pinon
nuts, which were a staple of Native Americans and are still eaten today. The trees usually don’t get any taller than 20 or 30 feet, however they can reach 400 years in age! Their unique appearance adds a certain rugged feel to the terrain of the Pine Mountain Club area.
The Pinon Pine has a unique relationship with a native bird species, the Pinon
Jay. The jay is famous for eating its favorite food, Pinon Pine seeds. The Pinon
Jay is also largely responsible for planting Pinon Pines. The Jay stores large amounts of the seeds in the ground for later consumption, however many seeds are left in the ground uneaten and subsequently turn into young Pinon Pines. This unusual relationship between Pinon Pines and the Pinon Jay ensures that the landscape of Pine Mountain Club will remain dotted with Pinon Pines, adding a charming characteristic to the already beautiful landscape.
